There's something else that uses 12-digit numerical codes as unique identifiers...the Internet.

People hated IP addresses so much that the time and effort was taken to create an incredibly complex system (DNS) which simply allows people to use descriptive names instead of numbers, while the computers can continue to use the numbers.

Perhaps Nintendo should develop a similar system, basically tying a username to a friend-code. The game's name would also be part of the full name, allowing the username to be reused between games, but that part would be invisible to the user, since each game could identify itself. Name registry would be first-come first serve, which could be discontinued by the user at a later date (to give a name to someone else or avoid another user that only knows you by username).

If they insist on continuing to use number codes, maybe it shouldn't be so long...there are over 61 billion potential friend codes...SSNs get by with only 9 digits and 3.4 billion possible numbers.

cool i had the rom too

examining the filestructure now :V

edit: fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuck
this looks like it's going to be one tough nut to crack

also what the shit at Isabella's theme

it's too bubblegum for this game xD

also p.s. hacking might start early on this - the map files are saved as .map wtf lol
they streamlined their maps

however you're going to love this, Xen

The ROM as a whole is compressed an what I mean by that is that the text data is compressed, too.

Woo looking through the ROM though I can give bits and details, though.
Ten COPs, meaning two COs just have insane CO zones. One is Forscythe.

The Japanese power names are:

Apocalyse Now
Bad Company
Enigma
Fatman
Fox One
Longbarrel
Next Age
Night Vision
Overload
Search and Rescue

God some of those names are badass.

Fatman implies there's going to be one missle-strike type of power. >:
Thanks THM for going through the game for me so I didn't have to spoil myself

Can I ask you a favor, I'll put it in a spoiler tag?
If possible, list the track names 1-50 IF YOU CAN or just as many as you have at the moment. I'm going to try working on that after I decompress the images in this game.

also good news THM

Hey so does anyone know what's going on with the blonde mechanic guy and the albino emo guy that both have full character portraits?

Is it possible that those two are playable in WiFi instead of Tabathia/Caulder?

The 'disposal' unit data isn't compressed. So it's not all bad! :P

But using 'Tahaxan', I'm able to see the map data and unit data files.

The map data is compressed but 'Tahaxan' can decompress the map making the format more viewable. The map data is simple stored as:

WW HH TTTT TTTT TTTT etc

The first byte is the map's width, the second byte is the map' height while the rest are 2 bytes per terrain.

I have a hunch the compressed map data is similar to AW2 an if that's the case, I'll be having fun editing them.

As for the unit data, that is uncompressed (^^) but figuring out what each byte does is a pain.

FE 01 6A AA BC 9C 0F B7 76 7A 89 00 58 55 76 76

02 05 09 00 00 64 64 64 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 05

The first byte is unit's x coordinate, the second byte is unit's y coordinate and the third byte is the unit used.

The four 64 bytes indicate HP, GAS and AMMO while the last two bytes I seem to be a repeat of the first two.

I'll need to edit the files to see if they do just that.

The worse part is, the files use Japanese names. Not only that, the map are in the WORSE ORDER EVER! They have been given random names that makes is difficult to confirm which map is which due to the names that are given to them. It will be fun working that out.

Also other files confirm some Japanese CO names.

Brenner - Brown

Cat and Cat Nazo - I'm guessing Penny and Tabitha

Nazo - Caulder

Those are just guesses mind

EDIT:

Image

How did that Recon get there? :P

Well unit editing shouldn't be too hard. But I'll need to find the map header data in order for me to move the unit data file meaning I can add in more units!

oh god i'm going to slap you

I discovered all the Japanese names last night picking harder than you with Tahaxan

also when ripping the CO themes

Brown : Brenner
Ed : Will
Rin : Lin (asdf)
Cat : Isabella
cat_nazo is the mystery-Isabella, when you still don't know her name
Athree : Tasha (Athena??)
Trak : Gage
Carlyle : Forscythe
Sigismund : Greyifeld
Dieter : Waylon
Agarth : Penny (Agatha??)
Elisabeth : Tabitha
Mengell : Caulder

ffffffffff

also yeah tahaxan can decompress the data but it raises a good question:
How do we recompress the data?

Well sorry Kosheh if you wasted your li... I mean had fun ripping the music and discovered the Japanese names first. It was just something that I remembered me and I don't remember anyone mentioning it.

*puts ice on where Kosh slapped him* :(

Anyway, if the data is LZSS (a popular compress format Nintendo love to use), then we can use certain programs to uncompress and decompress.

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,5539.0.html

I'm going to play about with the tools but as for the LZSS format data, it goes something like this:

Starts off with byte '10'. Then contains 3 (or four) bytes mention the size of the uncompressed data. The rest is the compressed data which I'm trying to get my head round.

The map data seems to be LZSS format but works in a different way to AW2.

Yeah, LZ77 isn't *too* bad to do by hand.

However, it is time consuming.
