in the Paint.net files of the graphics in Custom Wars, I saw that the transparent background was a grey and white checkered background. and this made the background for the graphic transparent in the game.

how do I add the transparent background?

Depends on what program you're using. I have no familiarity with Paint.NET, though. Try looking in the help files for transparency.

I don't use Panit.NET either, but it may be similar to Photoshop.

When you create a new file you have the option to make the background transparent. That's it.

Or when you have a layer, delete a section of it and you'll be left with that section transparent.

Also note that not all file formats support transparency.

Basically what Xaif said. What I do is use the Magic Wand tool to select the areas I want transparent and then cut them (ctrl + x). That should leave it transparent on whatever layer you're on at the time.

.gif supports transparency and I believe is what CW uses, if it helps at all.

I use GIFFY to convert my sprites to .gif and make the background transparent.

lol panit

But yeah what Xaif said because Xaif = cool

Take it into MSPaint, give it like a background that's easy to see (like fuschia), then bring it into Paint.NET and try deleting the fuschia areas with the magic wand tool.

paint.NET is too hardcore for me so yeah.

Paint.net, get rid of the background using any tool you wish, and then save as a gif format. There you can chose dithering level and transparency setting.
