Heya all, I stumbled accross this site while I was looking for Custom CO's for Advance Wars lol. It looked interesting so I figured I'd sign up.

lots of things wrong
unbalanced battles necessitate level grinding/spamming health items
lengthy, linear, and poorly designed dungeon crawling eschewed setting
shallow plot, character backstories dropped soon after joining party
party AI unhelpful and gets killed a lot
low replay value
etc.

FF12 came out round the same time, and for all its faults you could tell your guys what to do and they do it
hell that's one of its faults; it gets to a point where the game can play itself

I just want a fun game about pirates, in space or not, how hard can that be?
actually screw that there needs to be more western games
wait wait steampunk western games, like that wild wild west movie without the lameness

BUT it was better than star ocean 3

Will the 2004 remake do, or do we have to experience the original in all its 8-bit glory?

Surprisingly, the remake is... fine. It may even be better in some regards. Not that the old one isn't classic. You might want to give both a try. It's not like there's an overabundance of pirate simulators around and you have to choose only one.
